Virtual Sports Day

Eight VR sports activities for events.

The school sports day is one of the most quintessential British traditions, dating back to the Victorian era. Ask anyone educated in the UK about sports day, and they’ll likely go misty-eyed at the memories of sack race dramas, egg and spoon controversies and three-legged triumphs. Many will go on to see their children, or even grandchildren compete for family glory.

But how would sports day look in a corporate setting? With the exponential growth in competitive socialising, the value of fun in business (see our blog) has never been better appreciated. So, you could always rustle up the straightest teaspoons from the office kitchen, and some bean bags off Amazon. But what if you don’t have the space? What if Julie from accounts rolls her ankle? What will HR make of the Hula Hoop pass?! Then, there’s the unpredictable British weather…

Well, how about a modern twist on the traditional sports day? Something that can be played indoors (or out, in the right weather), that’s more inclusive, and with more exciting sports, including clay pigeon shooting, archery, tennis and golf? That’s the Unreal proposition. We bring everything needed for a fun, pop-up experience, including VR headsets, sporting accessories, a big screen for spectators to follow the action on and professional host(s). What’s more, we typically only need 2 × 2m of space, so we can offer your favourite sports… virtually anywhere!

So, get in touch, and let’s design your perfect virtual sports day, together!

    • Specialist public liability insurance

  • For up to 4 hours of daytime hosted gameplay, in mainland Britain (except Greater London), we typically charge £750+VAT, including all the above items. Additional concurrent headsets (for multiplayer or parallel activities) are charged at £600+VAT per extra setup (including headsets, and additional TVs / hosts to be agreed).

  • For comfort and safety, we recommend a minimum of 2m x 2m of floorspace. Standard height ceilings (c2.5m / 8’) are fine for most sports, even golf. For tennis, we recommend 3m if possible. For more than one headset being used concurrently, we’ll of course need more a bit more space, depending on the game / format.

Otherwise, VR works best in a well lit room, avoiding bright direct sunlight if possible, and not too warm.

  • Absolutely! Our standard backdrop is 2.4m x 2.4m and can be customised to any design you wish - just supply us with a high resolution, square image, and we’ll do the rest! We charge £200+VAT for printing, and the banner (fits frame with top and bottom pole) is yours to keep after the event.

  • We have a range of gameplay formats for each sport to suit a variety of audiences. For busy events, we’d suggest sports that take 2-3 minutes per player (golf, tennis, racing, archery), meaning around 5 people could compete in 3-4 sports each hour.

Need to entertain more than 5 people an hour? Just add a second or third setup, and double or triple the throughput to 10-15 per hour.

  • Are you in mainland Britain? If so, yes! We’ve covered many events, from the depths of Scotland to the Kent coast, and are happy to travel to wherever your event is located. In Ireland, mainland Europe or further afield? Please enquire, and if we can make it work, we’d love to see your part of the world.

  • Historically, this was common. However, in addition to technological advancements (i.e. lower latency). we’ve taken several steps to minimise if not irradicate the risk of this occurring. These include providing a tactile floor surface, specifying games with teleport and ‘snap turn’ options, and running short game formats. Please contact us to discuss any remaining concerns. We’ve yet to have a single complaint of motion sickness at any events.

  • Yes absolutely. Unreal Events provides a widescreen TV for each headset in use, so that spectators are engaged in the experience. We can also often utilise screens that are in-situ, in addition or instead of our TVs. The process of sharing the VR images in near real-time can be complex. We have six methods to do so, including carrying a mobile router as contingency for Wi-Fi issues.
